How long have lumineers been around

Fans and critics alike were eager to see another release within the usual artist timeframe. One year later…nothing.

Two, three years later…zilch. Four years later…BAM, their first single in four whole years is released, proving that the Denver-based trio are in fact alive and still kicking. Four years is far longer than your typical output from a brand new Grammy-nominated band. So why the wait? What was the method to their madness?

Joshua tragically died of a drug overdose in , at age 19, leaving behind his little brother Jeremiah Fraites -- percussionist for The Lumineers. Living in the city meant that Wes and Jeremiah had to work three jobs to cover rent, leaving no time to work on music.

So, the pair moved to Denver, Colorado in Every Tuesday, The Lumineers performed at an open mic night at a small person bar known as the Meadowlark. The Lumineers gradually, yet energetically, pours out a nostalgic and heartbreaking sound, crafted with stomp-claps, snare rolls, romantic guitar strums, classical strings, and parlor piano among other elements.

Moura gives the pair a cautious thumbs-up. The bandmates could almost pass for film stars themselves. The long-haired Schultz looks not unlike a young Kurt Russell, while Fraites, in his pork pie hat, is a dead ringer for Woody Harrelson.

When Fraites was just 14, his older brother, Josh, died of a heroin overdose. Schultz was a childhood friend of Josh, and lost his own father to cancer around the same time. Playing music together was initially part of their shared grieving process. As they have grown and matured as a band — the pair moved to Denver, Colorado, together before finding their eloquent folk-rock sound, and eventually an audience — they say they have become better able to elucidate the overwhelming emotions that first drew them to make music.

That song is about my dad dying! The songs hit home for the band. Fraites recently celebrated five years of sobriety.

Contrary to the stereotypical image of an acoustic duo wearing suspenders and floppy hats, The Lumineers tour as a six-person band and put on a rollicking show. Oh, but I can write a song. When he turned 30 and was still sleeping on an air mattress on tour, he was ready to call it quits. Schultz could use that reminder sometimes. He still worries people are going to leave halfway through a show. No one deserves for thousands of people to line up to see you.

Other songs by The Lumineers have that effect on fans enough for them to get tattoos of the lyrics. Schultz weekly shares photos from fans with the hashtag MyLumineersTattoo. Edit Close.
