What is the significance of paul’s ‘emmaus road’ experience

Dear Padtor Owen! It was a wonderful sermon. May the Risen Lord continue to bless you and your ministry. The gentle way which the Lord used to show himself to Cleopas and friend is very true. How very perceptive is the Lord of the overwrought nerves and deep depression of these two ordinary disciples!

In talking about Jesus as they walk along they no long call him son of God or messiah, but prophet.

Jesus coming into their midst unrecognized shows the mercy of God seeking the lost. Christ, the Good Shepherd goes after these two lost sheep. He wants to bring them back to the Church in Jerusalem where they will indeed go later that night. This image is one of great joy over one who is lost and then found—as in the parable of the prodigal son or the parable of the lost coin Luke In the same way you may have family members who have been away from the Church for years.

What great joy we experience when they return. The heavens rejoice over this return—and also when we return to Christ through the sacrament of confession. In leaving the Church, they no longer have the faith necessary to see Jesus. In 1 Corinthian —58 Paul explains that the earthly body is to the resurrected body as a seed is to a tree. The resurrected body is clothed with power, glory and immortality. So what does Jesus do when he joins these disciples on the road and remains unrecognized?

Instead, Jesus holds a Bible study and explains Scripture as they walk the seven miles to Emmaus, seven being the number of covenant. Jesus shows how everything points to Himself. Hugh of St. The Scriptures foretold the necessity of my passion and death.

I told you this was going to happen! When they arrive at their home in Emmaus, it seems that Jesus will be continuing on until the disciples invite him to stay with them. Jesus is waiting to be invited. It is the same with us. He is always there wanting to come into our heart.

Perhaps this represents the way Jesus wants people to know Him: on a basic, core, everyday level, practical and authentic, not fancy or fussy or only for a certain class or rank. The men are not named at all until midway through the story, and then only one of them is identified: Cleopas. And, at this point, the only other people to have had a supernatural encounter were women, who found the tomb empty save for two angels. At that time in history, women were low in status.

That these seemingly unimportant women received a revelation, followed by these two seemingly unimportant men, perhaps signifies the universality of the resurrection message. Jesus was born to a humble woman in humble circumstances. His life was spent in suffering, wandering, and hated as he traveled from place to place, until He was finally arrested, beaten, tortured, nailed to a cross, and left to die a terrible, gruesome death.

The experience of the two men and their encounter with Jesus upon the road to Emmaus is powerful. What Are the Marks of a True Believer? What Are the Prophecies about Jesus?
