A speech disorder usually indicates that someone has trouble producing certain sounds accurately. Young children who are learning how to speak will probably substitute, leave out, or distort normal speech sounds. This is a speech problem. Language deals with meaning. Or they may have trouble communicating their own thoughts expressive language issues.
Imagine a child who has good speech and pronounces words correctly. Speech disorders and language disorders may occur separately. Or an individual may have both kinds of disorders at the same time. Most children, by their second birthday, have a vocabulary of about 50 words. Using your voice incorrectly or for prolonged periods of time can also result in a hoarse vocal quality. It might be a sign of a potentially life-threatening condition, such as a stroke. If you develop impaired speech more gradually, make an appointment with your doctor.
It may be a sign of an underlying health condition. To diagnose your condition, your doctor will likely start by requesting a complete medical history and evaluating your symptoms. Your doctor will also likely ask you a series of questions to hear you talk and assess your speech.
This can help them determine your level of comprehension and speaking ability. It can also help them learn if the condition is affecting your vocal cords, your brain, or both. Depending on your medical history and symptoms, your doctor may order one or more tests, such as:. It may involve an evaluation by a:.
In some cases, they may also recommend assistive communication devices. For example, they may advise you to use an electronic device to translate typed messages into verbal communication. Speech therapy is the main treatment for AOS.
This treatment is customized to each individual and typically takes place one-on-one. In severe cases of AOS, learning hand gestures or sign language may be encouraged as alternative forms of communication.
Your therapist may prescribe exercises to help improve your breath control and increase your tongue and lip coordination. They need to give you ample time to respond to questions and comments. But your doctor can prescribe treatments to help manage your symptoms.
For example, they may prescribe botulinum toxin injections Botox or surgery to your vocal cords. This may help reduce spasms. They may advise you to avoid caffeine or other drugs that can irritate your vocal cords.
In rare cases, you may need surgery or other medical treatments. Some types and causes of adult speech impairment are impossible to prevent.
Early intervention services may be provided on a sliding-fee basis, meaning that the costs to the family will depend upon their income. Just as IDEA requires that early intervention be made available to babies and toddlers with disabilities, it requires that special education and related services be made available free of charge to every eligible child with a disability, including preschoolers ages Many children are identified as having a speech or language impairment after they enter the public school system.
Parents may ask to have their child evaluated. This evaluation is provided free by the public school system. If the child is found to have a disability under IDEA—such as a speech-language impairment—school staff will work with his or her parents to develop an Individualized Education Program , or IEP.
